Health and Wellbeing

Our Individual and Case Support service provides confidential advice, guidance, and advocacy to help individuals facing discrimination, inequality, or injustice navigate their challenges and access the support they need.

What is Health & Wellbeing Support?

Health and wellbeing support helps individuals, particularly refugees and new arrivals, understand and manage their emotional, psychological, and physical health. We offer one-to-one guidance and link clients to services including GP practices, mental health support, community activities, and specialist agencies. Many individuals face emotional challenges related to past trauma, culture shock, or ongoing uncertainty in the immigration process. TREC is here to provide sensitive, culturally competent support that puts each person’s needs first.

Understanding Health and Wellbeing

Trauma and Adjustment

Many people accessing our services have experienced trauma, including war, displacement, family separation, exploitation, or abuse. These experiences are often followed by stress, anxiety, or depression when adapting to life in a new country.

Cultural and Language Barriers

Some individuals struggle to express their needs or seek help due to stigma around mental health, language barriers, or unfamiliarity with the UK’s healthcare system.

Isolation and Discrimination

Social isolation, racism, and a lack of community connections can have a significant impact on mental health and confidence.

This includes one-to-one emotional support tailored to each person’s needs. We help individuals explore their mental health, understand their wellbeing, and plan steps toward healing and recovery.

Success Stories & Case Studies

Below is an example of a person we helped recently with a race discrimination case; their name and identifiable information have been omitted to ensure their anonymity.

Supporting Ahmed Through Trauma

Ahmed, a young man who had fled conflict in his home country, arrived in Leicester alone and visibly distressed. He struggled with anxiety, nightmares, and isolation. Through our Health and Wellbeing Officer, Ahmed was referred to a trauma-informed counselling service and supported in registering with a GP. We also helped him connect with a local football group and social activities. Over time, Ahmed regained confidence, improved his mental wellbeing, and began to feel part of the community.

Supporting in His Workplace Discrimination Case

A qualified engineer, was overlooked for promotion several times, despite having more experience than his peers. He suspected it was due to his ethnicity, as others with fewer qualifications were promoted instead.

After contacting TREC, we helped Ahmed file a formal complaint with his employer and supported him through the process. With our assistance, the company reviewed their practices, and Ahmed was offered the promotion he deserved.

The organisation also committed to improving their internal diversity and equality policies to prevent future discrimination.
