What is ESOL Safety Signs at Work?
Understanding Workplace Safety Signs
Many learners face barriers understanding workplace safety information due to limited English. Unfamiliar vocabulary, confusing symbols, and lack of prior training can leave individuals feeling unsure or excluded in workplace environments.
Standardising Delivery
We are developing a professional training video and structured guidance for Community Learning Assistants (CLAs), Workplace Learning Assistants (WLAs), and tutors to ensure consistent, high-quality course delivery.
Expanding to New Learners
Pilot projects are being introduced for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) learners and Adult Basic Education (ABE) programmes, adapting materials to ensure accessibility and inclusive learning experiences.
Creative Sector Engagement
A new drama-based learning component is being developed to engage SEND learners creatively. We are also connecting with prison and probation services to pilot safety awareness training within justice settings.
Professional Development
Teaching materials are being professionally redesigned to meet educational standards. Regional show events and a comprehensive evaluation process will provide detailed reporting to stakeholders.

Building Strong Foundations for Expansion
The original ESOL Safety Signs at Work course was successfully piloted with 40 learners, including garment-worker clients from the Fashion-workers Advice Bureau in Leicester and TREC service users.
Participants completed structured sessions focused on recognising safety colours, shapes, and meanings, and all received certificates of completion. Evaluation findings showed increased familiarity with safety signs, improved English vocabulary, and enhanced learner confidence.
These outcomes confirmed the programme’s effectiveness and created a strong foundation for the current 24-month consolidation and expansion phase, ensuring delivery remains aligned with the original proposal while extending its reach and long-term impact.
